The Timeless Art of Pressing Flowers: A Tradition Preserved

At Stag Ridge Mercantile, we are honored to carry on the centuries-old tradition of flower pressing, an art form that transforms fresh blooms into lasting keepsakes. Whether we’re preserving a pressed wedding bouquet or crafting a custom pressed flower art piece, we feel deeply connected to the long history behind this beautiful process.

A Tradition Rooted in History

Flower pressing dates back thousands of years. The oldest known pressed flowers were found in a 2,000 year old Roman tomb and are believed to have been preserved as part of funeral rites. But perhaps the most famous example comes from Japan, where the art of Oshibana (the arrangement of pressed flowers to create images) flourished as early as the 16th century. Even the Victorian era embraced pressing flowers as a romantic pastime, often creating floral keepsakes from bouquets and garden collections. This tradition has survived through the ages because of its emotional weight. Flowers mark moments like weddings, memorials & anniversaries. Preserving them keeps those moments close. We are so glad that this honored practice is still loved today, especially through the modern trend of wedding flower preservation.

A Blend of Science and Sentiment

While flower pressing can be a fun and rewarding hobby, we have learned through years of trial and error that preserving special flowers (i.e. bridal bouquet or memorial arrangement) requires knowledge, patience & precision. We've spent countless hours researching historic techniques and modern science to develop our own refined process. Our bouquet preservation service is rooted in love and craftsmanship. We carefully evaluate each bloom’s shape, thickness and water content to determine the best way to press it and we have developed color restoration methods to help flowers hold their vibrancy over time.

Each flower frame we create is handcrafted with care and designed not just to display, but to honor.

Pressing Flowers Today: A Modern Renaissance

It’s heartening to see flower pressing making a comeback, not just as art, but as a meaningful way to preserve the moments that matter. From heirloom wedding bouquet frames to botanical wedding art, we’re proud to be part of this resurgence. Though it’s a lovely craft to try at home with garden blooms, we always recommend leaving your most meaningful flowers, especially your wedding bouquet, to professionals who know how to bring out their best. Our studio in Tennessee receives flowers from all across the country and each one is treated with the respect and care it deserves.
